The COVID-19 delta variant is by far the most dominant variant circulating right now in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Scientists determine the prevalence of a particular variant through genomics testing and DNA sequencing but according to Dr. Jill Roberts, a molecular epidemiologist at the University of 91视频, the U.S. is only running genomics on about 10 percent of positive cases (WTSP-TV).
The state is about a month away from its peak, according to an epidemiologist who tracks the virus there. 鈥淪hort term and long term, the cases are going to explode,鈥 Edwin Michael, a professor of epidemiology at the University of 91视频, in Tampa, said in an interview. 鈥淲e are predicting that the cases will be peaking the first week of September鈥 (New York Times).
Microbiomes impact everything from metabolism to immunity. Now, the University of 91视频's new Institute of Microbiomes is looking into how these tiny organisms can be used to improve our health and the environment (Bay News 9).
The U.S. National Science Foundation has selected Dr. Jos茅 Luis Zayas-Castro of the University of 91视频 to serve as division director for the Division of Engineering Education and Centers. Zayas-Castro, who begins his NSF term on August 2, is currently executive associate dean, associate dean for international affairs, and professor of industrial and management systems engineering in the 91视频College of Engineering (nsf.gov).
